Connect Groups
Connect™ is a 10-week attachment based program to support parents and caregivers of pre-teens and teens with difficult behavioural and emotional problems. Parents meet in small groups for one hour and a half each week.
Each session provides parents with a new perspective on parent-teen relationships and adolescent development. Parents watch role- plays, try exercises, and work together to develop new choices for responding to their teen’s difficult behaviour.
Rather than teach only one way of parenting, parents are encouraged to see choices that support healthy relationships while setting limits and helping their teen to move forward. Connect assists parents and their teens (often in the most difficult of circumstances) to re-establish or to better their relationship, and subsequently address problem behaviour and related mental health issues.
Connect has been widely adopted throughout the province of BC, where it originated, and is quickly growing across Canada. It has been incorporated into various mental health programs at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, and is quickly becoming popular in Calgary and surrounding communities. Our CONNECT was the first one offered in Medicine Hat, and the only Foster parent CONNECT program in Medicine Hat and area.
